Brandon came home from school one day and announced that he was going to be Batman for Halloween. He then convinced his sister that she wanted to be Robin. She said yes but that she needed a fluffy skirt. She's very into skirts and dresses that are good for twirling these days.
Batman was easy as I found a cool barely used costume for just $10. Robin took a bit more creativity. I'm not a crafty person. I don't really even enjoy crafting... but I have crafty friends and family members. I don't mind the planning process, I just seem to loose interest before I finish a project. Enter... my mother... a talented seamstress that can easily be bribed with dinner to sew things for me.
I bought a little red shirt, a yellow bandana, and some sticky back foam backing. Mom made the shirt more narrow, sewed two yellow stripes across the front, and sewed the bandana/cape onto the back. I found a yellow headband and green and yellow tule to make a fluffy tutu. Green tights and a foam R to stick on her shirt and she was ready to go.

We have never taken the kids trick-or-treating on Halloween. It just seems silly considering I don't let the kids eat the candy. Brandon is allergic to chocolate and has a sensitive tummy when it comes to sugar in general. The sugar rush and bathroom trips just aren't worth the hassle. Instead, we try to go to as many fall festivals as possible. Local churches in the Frisco area often start their fall festivals mid October so there are lots of opportunities for the kids to wear and enjoy their costumes. Their favorite part of the festivals are the bounce houses which is just fine with me.
They somehow collected giant bags of candy at their first festival. We decided to donate the candy to the children who do not get to attend festivals on Halloween. (so it was left on our front porch with a sign that read "help yourself"). Then all of the candy that was collected on Halloween, we agreed to donate to the poor adults that didn't get any candy on Halloween. (So my fellow coworkers at Post Asylum were forced to eat our big bucket of candy).
We had a great fall festival run and the kids got to wear their costumes several times which made them really happy. We all painted our faces and dressed up for the Festival on Halloween. Sly's face paint turned out especially well.
